QotD: Greatest Video Game Console

Undecided for the win. For me it is currently a toss up between the Wii and X-Box 360. (After having just finished writing my post I think the 360 may take the cake)

I'm having a blast with the legend of zelda: twilight princess on the Wii right now. But I'm wondering what will happen if or when the new game interface looses some of it's novelty.

The X-Box 360 would win hands down, minus a few big things.

1: It is the spawn of Microsoft. (Ok I know it is cliche, but I'm a mac user so I have more ground to hop on the self-righteousness).
2: The hardware issues. I'm hoping these will have been solved, or at least minimized, in the most recent incarnate of the xbox. It is thiner and has who knows what else done to it.
3: No motion sensing technology in its controls. The very foundation in the Wii and something that has been included in the PS3.

The positive sides of the 360 (can't live in all the negatives.)
1: The games you can purchase on X-Box live have a leg up over the ones on the PS network.
2: Xbox only games. Bioshock and Halo3. Though I've yet to play either.
3: It plays old XBox games; long live Star Wars: kotor.
4: They at least have a DDR title for the Xbox-360.

Right now the PS3 I own has been little more than a BlueRay player. This saddens me as the hardware has sooo sooo much potential. However potential isn't worth a whole lot if it is never made use of. Right now it still can't even play all my old DDR games. The PS2 still reigns supreme on that one.

On that note, I say the PS2 takes my vote for second/thrid. If I was still a hard-core DDR fan it might take the top of my list. But like my star wars obsession my DDR obsession has fallen by the wayside.

[this is good]
You can thank Jay for my belated response. i was going to just dash off a quick reply about video game consoles (which occupy an unusually large amount of my conscious considerations), until i saw that jay had written a proper thought out response with pros and cons and a chart and a theme song. so, not to be outdone, i resolved to write as excellent a reply as was ever replied, and promptly put it off. (7 minutes of webcomics later) see? i just did it again. seriously, i didnt make that up, those webcomics demanded reading.

okay, so video game consoles. first, i think i ought to comment on your selection. the nintendo ds lite is arguably one of the most successful consoles after the ps2. it revolutionized the handheld industry, and to some extent began the revolution in all of gaming that nintendo has continued with the wii. that is, the opening of gaming to broader audiences. touch generations isnt just a catchy phrase, its happening. digital immigrants are taking to the ds like a foreign film with subtitles; they dont quite understand all of the meaning and underpinnings, but they know what people are saying and kinda like the sex/action scenes.

However! you have, in my opinion, maligned your post on one point: you dont have any DS titles on your wishlist. Legend of Zelda: Phantom menace may be the zelda installment youve been waiting for. it has been reviewed as a game obviously more accessible to casual audiences, easier but rewarding puzzles as well as a more story oriented gameplay. Also! what of the other games soon to be? mario party ds sounds very promising (speak not to me of previously anticipated games that were similar) and theres also phoenix wright: trials and tribulations, contra 4, Geometry wars galaxies, and more. and have you checked out jam sessions? ill try to motivate myself to blog about it later, since ive been playing with it for the past week.

RIght. so, I like the DS. its great. but theres also this shiny new thing in my living room called an xbox 360. I only have one game for it at the moment, (and oh what a game it is) but there are maybe 6 or 7 i plan on purchasing within as many months, so the promise is there. i dont even use the online components at the moment (seeing as i cant make them work yet) and im still very satisfied with the machine. the PS3 may have a lot of advantages, but in gaming, i think that content is what matters. Sega had great consoles, but no fun games. with a lineup like the 360 has (halo 3, skate, call of duty 4, bioshock, rockband, mass effect, crysis, assassins creed, and too many more) its just not easy for a console to top that right now.

that is, ignoring the wii. I chose the Nintendo Wii as my top video game console. i like to play video games alone. its fun. but i have so many things to do with my alone time that it doesnt get done very often. however, when im with friends, video games happen alot. and when they do, i need to have something fun, attractive, accessible and intuitive. thats where my wii kicks ass. Nintendo's franchises are simply unparralelled in their ability to capture large audiences, and it absolutely shows in my home. you cant make a large portion of people give a spartan shit about headshots. but let them dance around punching the air until someone falls down, and suddenly games can be fun. but if it is headshots youre looking for, id be hard pressed to find a control scheme better suited to pulling one off than the one found in metroid prime 3, made possible by the wiimote. throw in the mario franchises, virtual console, DS connectivity and pricetag, and its not hard to see what makes this the topselling console on the market 9 months running and the top reason my tv gets turned on every day.
