Bird Call of Destiny
I mentioned earlier (Time to Kick It Up) that I'd put in a volunteer application for the World Center for Birds of Prey to give myself a new "project" to kick around. About a week-and-a-half back, I got a call from the volunteer coordinator that he'd like me to come in for a volunteer orientation session. Little did I know when I arrived at the Center earlier today for orientation that life would intervene to give me a sign that I was in the right place.
You see, after entering the main building, I was surprised by not one, but two, blasts from the pasts. Standing behind the counter was my high school chemistry teacher, Mr. Purdy, apparently now working as the Education Programs Coordinator at the Center. (He was almost exclusively responsible for kindling my love for Chemistry, and by extension, the reason why I majored in field in college.) Furthermore, the Volunteer Coordinator at the Center, Nick Piccono, was a good acquaintance from my college days.
I'm not a very superstitious person, but I can only see this as a sign that volunteering at the Center is where I need to be. I'm definitely looking forward to going through more training over the next few weeks towards becoming an Interpretive Center Docent. There's a lot to learn, but I'm really excited to have something new to focus on. (And what's not exciting about a goal of having a red-tailed hawk perch on your wrist?)
Plan on more thrilling descriptions of adventures in bird sitting in the weeks (and months) to come. The sky's the limit!
